About this level

Little writers are kids who have already learned most of the decoding skills, are able to read simple children’s books, and are applying spelling rules (which are linked to decoding rules) to become more accurate spellers. They are, however, very imaginative and have a lot of stories to tell. They may be still working on their spelling and standard grammar, but are able to produce longer stories as prompted by the teacher.

While we are striving for more accuracy, we do not wish to make them feel inadequate, humiliated, or doubtful of their ability so that they lose interest or confidence as writers. We want to promote writing fluency by taking great interest in the content of their writing as we gently nudge them into having more linguistic awareness and start using editing skills on their drafts.

It is also important for little writers to be exposed early on to different genres and different types of writing. They can understand and produce at their own levels, which paves the way to their future learning. Guided by a growth mindset, Little Writers strive to lead young kids experience writing by helping them see what they can do as a writer and chart out their first map of the realm of writing.
